SPEEDWAY: THE PAUL GRIMSHAW INTERVIEWS (Page 2 of 5)
Interview by Gary Radice
Article
: Added November 2002, updated December 2003, July 2006, July 2009
From December 2003:

"Thanks to Eddie Kelly who has been an enormous help with his knowledge of arks and their history.

"To Ben Lovell who has offered his support and to Jack Schofield who has listened patiently and offered his impartial, realistic advice and help."

At the time of this small update in 2003 Paul had obtained an Ark for restoration. Ark no. 126 was built by Orton and Spooner in 1932.

Paul, how's things?

Things have been going a bit slow since we moved the timber parts and I'm under pressure to get the platforms moved from my driveway.

I've just finished cutting them up into thirds and I've taken all the hinges and other metal fittings off. I am due to dispose of the platforms this weekend except the one I've kept to use as a template.

The next practical job is to bring the centre/paybox home. This is proving to be a challenge as it's too tall to go on a flatbed truck so the solution maybe to use a lowloader.

At this rate it's going to cost more to move than I paid for it!

As regards practical restoration work, nothing will really happen now until things are on a more firm footing. I need to assess the state of all the parts and get estimates of how much the work and materials are going to cost.

This information will go into my Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) application which is now underway. The HLF application is crucial to the future of the project and needs to be worked out in meticulous detail before submission.

The HLF submission should be ready in the spring and a decision from the HLF will take a further 3 to 4 months so I don't anticipate things moving much before Summer.

To top all this I'm moving house so the Ark will have to be moved once again. I don't have anywhere to move to at the moment so I'm on the look out for storage (farm yard, barn, shed, etc).

Many thanks for your continued support and interest.
