BITSoftheBEACH: Ghost Train

This wonderful ride dates back to 1930 but it wasn't until 1936, when Joseph Emberton rebuilt it, that it found its home where it is today backing onto Watson Road.

The ride was originally introduced into the park by Mr Kamiya from Japan and takes its name from a stage show popular at the time. The Ghost Train then became the generic term for these type of (Pretzel) rides here in the UK.

The Ghost train is spread over two levels and 827 feet of track. Watch out for the revolving tunnel that is very effective and the skeletons on their bicycles towards the end, although you can't really miss them!

August 2003 and I noticed a new addition to the ride that I haven't seen before; a model of a man, head forward and throwing up...A new 'gag' so as to speak!

Some of the above appears contradicted however by the following - taken from the website Double Exposure:

"Shohimon [Harry] Kayami built Middleton Tower Holiday Camp at Morecambe. According to his grandson, Harry's brother Monzo, whose name was not on record, owned Luna Park on the South Shore at Blackpool, which had its own Ghost Train. Neither of them were ever connected with the Pleasure Beach Ghost Train or Pretzel Ride.

The name of the ride was changed from Pretzel to Ghost Train following Jack Hulbert's film, "Ghost Train", which was released in 1931, just one year after the original ride opened."

...So there you go!
