Special Offer: Southend Kursaal

Joyland Books brings you the opportunity to buy the original history of the Kursaal Amusement Park at Southend-on-Sea, released on two audio cassettes.

These two one-hour radio programmes, produced in 1993 by Chris Izod and John Fryer for Eastern Counties Radio, are now available from Joyland Books on one-hour audio cassettes. They are narrated by Mark Roman, the voice of Pathe News in the series A Year to Remember. The two programmes cover the history of the Kursaal with contributions from members of the families that first settled on the site. They trace the history of the park from its early days, when operated by travelling showmen, to its peak in the middle part of the last century as the South's biggest amusement park, ending with its sad decline and closure in the 1980s. All the sound effects are genuine, being taken from open reel tape recordings made during the early 1950s by the operators of Radio Kursaal.
