In this article, the second part of his 'Welsh Travelogue' written especially for themagiceye (click here for Part One), Phil Gould revisits the Welsh summer holidays of his youth. Phil kindly shares his memories and photographs of a bygone time.
Although I had been a regular visitor to the amusement parks dotted along the North Wales coast as a child the seaside funfairs located in central and South Wales remained something of a mystery to me until the early 80s.  

This was rectified by a couple of day trips that I made when I was in my late teens...

In the summer of 1981 my dad suggested that himself and I make a day trip to South Wales to visit Barry Island and Porthcawl.
 
An early morning start led to me discovering the delights of Pat Collins's Pleasure Park, situated next door to the Butlin's Holiday Camp, at Barry Island and Coney Beach at nearby Porthcawl.
 
Both parks had some of the latest novelties of the time and the latter had many historic attractions that are now, sadly, no more than a fading memory.

However, before heading further afield I thought it might be worth stopping off at an old familiar friend  on the way - Rhyl's Ocean Beach - to see how the park on the promenade was faring at the start of the decade that taste forgot...
