Opened in 1959 The Derby Racer was built over
a two year period by Frank Wright (who was The Pleasure Beach's general manager) and his staff. The ride was originally designed by Fred A.
Church.
It was based upon a similar ride operating
in Toronto, Canada. The diameter of the ride is 82 feet and there are 56 horses in all. Other rides of this type can be found
at Cedar Point, Ohio, USA and Playland, N.Y. USA.
Those wanting to race though will be disappointed - the mechanism controlling this has been broken for three years as
at June 2004 and it looks unlikely that it will be fixed in the short
term. However the horses still go up and down.
The ride operator was certainly warning riders against standing up on the ride and trying to rock the horses back and forth towards the end of 2002 season.
