The Roller Coaster has its origins in The Velvet Coaster that was built by William Strickler and operated between 1909
and 1932.
The present day ride opened in 1933 and utilises the lift hill of the aforementioned ride.
Various statistics state that it reaches speeds of up to 35mph over a course of (anywhere between) 2,293 feet and 2,400 feet.
The Roller Coaster delivers plenty of thrills and "air time" for all coaster enthusiasts whatever the age and boasts some of the most comfortable seats on any coaster anywhere.
It has no restraint bars at all!
It has been suggested that Buddy Holly referred to this very ride in the lines of one of his songs..."going faster than a Roller Coaster..."
Mrs. L.D. Thompson MBE (Geoffrey's mum) has gone on record to say that the seats were once made of velvet and when it rained the dye
ran!
...An American Coaster Enthusiasts' classic coaster.
(The smaller hills in the photo belong to that of the
junior Zipper Dipper)
