Martin
Burridge developed a fascination with Barnstaple Fair when his
mother took him and his siblings to the fair before he started
school.That childhood
fascination developed into a serious involvement and study of the
fairground business. For almost 40 years, Martin has been the Devon
correspondent for the World’s Fair, the weekly journal of the
travelling fairground business. He is a friend to many of the
showmen that visit Barnstaple in September, and is an honorary
member of the Showmens’ Guild of Great Britain, the trade
association which represents the majority of those involved in
running fairgrounds.
Barnstaple Fair is the largest fair
in Devon and attracts the latest white knuckle rides from across the
country as well as all the family favourites, Dodgems, Waltzers and
Golden Gallopers.
The book traces the history of the
fair and introduces readers to some of the more colourful
characters, the presenters and performers of the old time shows that
have enlivened it.
Illustrated with colour and black &
white photographs throughout. |
