The Barrys, a branch of the
Chipperfield family, came to Ireland in 1914 with Heckenberg's
Circus, but were soon running their own, as well as providing the
logistics for others over from the mainland. They branched into
rides, sited over much of the country, and later into freakshows,
waxworks, Wall of Death and making ice cream. The family has been
remarkably innovative - for instance buying the first Italian
dodgems in the UK - and, unusually, has a majority of female
management. Today, Barrys Amusements at Portrush is arguably the
brightest amusement park in Ireland.Professor Fairley's book is a comprehensive history of the firm,
illustrated with photographs dating back to the early years of last
century, showing the Trufelli family, the amusements and people
