For over
40 years Malcolm Clay had been gathering material for a book on the
Fossett family and their various circuses. Over this period of time
he had collected posters, programmes, photos, reviews and press
cuttings as well as visiting and interviewing members of the
extended Fossett family. But Malcolm also had many other interests.
part from his work as a solicitor and his family he was also
secretary of the Association of Circus Proprietors, the CFA
archivist, a school governor and had other charitable and local
interests. Sadly, Malcolm passed away in January 2015, before he had
the opportunity to write the book he had so long researched.
However, he did write one chapter on
the Leatherlands and Herbert and May Reco. Mark Twitchett had also
been researching Reco Brothers' Circus and, knowing of his interest
in the Reco story, Malcolm had asked his wife Nora to email his
manuscript to Mark. This forms the basis of this book, with
additional material by Mark Twitchett.
The book includes:
- Herbert Wroe's early career
- Reco & May variety acts
- Blondini high wire act
- Tenting with the Paulo's
- Reco Bros Empire Circus
- The Jeserich Circus
- Reco & May with Bertram Mills
