The Pier has pointed
a challenging finger into the English Channel from Teignmouth
seafront for almost 140 years. Its initial purpose was for the
convenience of boat travellers, but it kept pace with public demand
and was nurtured as an epicentre of boundless pleasure and
entertainment.
The pier has had an ever-changing
life and had extensions added and removed, boats bumping into it,
deck sections cut away and replaced, bombs dropped next to it,
machine gun bullets riddling it and has even had bits blown away by
dynamite. It has been the subject of numerous photographs, paintings
and postcards and was even featured in a play, but this is the first
time that this unique structure has had a book written about it. |
