As the depression
tightened in the early 1930s a prize of groceries was a God-send for
many poor families. A carrier bag filled with sugar, butter, tea and
a fresh chicken could make all the difference. It was a dream which
Joe Barak made a reality for hundreds of people for over three
decades. Better known as Chicken Joe, this is his story. His stall,
one of the dozens at major fairs, became a legend in itself. No
wonder the slogan emblazoned on the front read: "The Man You All
Know!"
