From the back cover:

"Stephen Smith and Kevin Scrivens both were founder members of the Fairground Association just over a decade ago, and as well as writing articles and books have organised displays and exhibitions over the country.

Stephen Smith was born in Hull, less than a mile from the Fairground in Walton Street. His interest in fairs began with annual visits to Hull Fair, and soon expanded into collecting photographs and information, which were particularly useful in preparing a dissertation for a degree course at Newcastle University. Stephen Smith is currently Head of History at a school in Newcastle under Lyme.

Research for this book began with an article published to commemorate the centenary of Hull Fair in Walton Street in 1988. It traces the Fair back to its medieval origins and shows how Hull Fair has maintained its position as one of the most important, and arguably the biggest travelling fair in the country. The book is illustrated with 100 black and white and 12 colour photographs."
