The well-known writer and broadcaster
on topical themes, Rev Frank Jennings, gives an entertaining account
of his lifelong involvement with the circus, drawing on his work as
a circus chaplain and his many friendships with circus people
(including Coco the Clown, who contributes an introduction) to
depict life under the Big Top. Thoroughly at home in this exotic
world of sawdust and spangles, the author vividly conveys the
contrast between the flawless performance and the endless practice,
behind the scenes, where animals and trainers, clowns and tightrope
artists, all work together in a spirit of comradeship and good
humour.
