Each summer in Britain nearly a
million people visit steam traction engine rallies. It is ironic
that these machines, many of which spent their working lives
struggling against official and popular prejudice, have in their
retirement won an enthusiastic following, which is growing every
year.This book offers a
concise and authoritative survey of the traction engine in all its
diverse forms, from the lumbering steam roller to the highly
decorated Showmans road locomotives. Brian Johnson, who is cofounder
of the Worthing and Southern Counties Historic Vehicles Group and a
Committee Member of the National Traction Engine Club, includes
chapters on the history, the various uses and designs of the
traction engine, as well as notes on how they work, on the rallies
and museums where they can be seen and on societies for the
enthusiast.
A special feature of the book is
the 80-page section of full colour photographs which illustrate over
150 of the engines. The text provides full descriptive notes on each
engine illustrated.
