From the inside front cover:
"When the fair comes to town, few of
us see beyond the hamburger stalls and dodg'ems, the candyfloss and
ghost train. Time was when fairs dominated business, and the very
food we ate depended on dealers, drovers and the great country
gatherings of spring, summer and Michaelmas. The 'greatest fair in
the Kingdom' lasted until 1959 - only thirty years ago - and it was
held at a tiny Hampshire village called Weyhill, near Andover."
