As the UK was coming to terms with decimalisation in 1971, visitors to the Pleasure Beach were introduced to
the Gold Mine.
It was reportedly designed by Maurice Ayers, a special effects director, who had to his credit the parting of
the Red Sea scene in the movie 'The Ten Commandments',
but other sources say Ayers had no part in the
design.
The ride was built by an in-house team under supervision from Arrow Dynamics, Utah, USA.
A similar ride can be found at
Knott Berry Farm, California, but the eight minute ride there (longer than the one at Blackpool) is driven by the ride operator on the train.
The Calico Gold Mine in California which opened in 1960, won a classic attraction award from the Themed Entertainment Association in 1998.
Highlights of the Blackpool ride include going down the 'wind swept' mine shaft at the beginning of the ride and going through Bourbon
