Judith Bluck's wall is not
a wall at all. It is a sculpture of people bathing. (This cannot be made out very clearly from
the photo here)
This mural of Accrington Brick was originally commissioned
in 1980 for the Victoria Street entrance of Blackpool's Hounds Hill shopping centre but the seaside postcard theme was deemed
too politically incorrect by councillors at a planning meeting so the sculpture was taken down and put into storage.
So who would have the sense to acquire
it? Why none other than the
the Pleasure Beach management of course!
The sculpture was erected in
the park in July 1999.
Thankfully, it can now
be viewed from Tom Sawyer's Bridge giving people the chance to
make up their own minds.
(Judith Bluck is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Sculptors.)
