Change at Pleasure Beach, Blackpool [5/12/05]
Big changes are planned at Britain's
most-visited tourist attraction, Blackpool Pleasure Beach. The
excellent
235 Club website reports that Vikingar, The Whip and Turtle
Chase are now in the process of being removed and placed in storage.
Spin Doctor is for sale, so may not operate next year. Main Street
(in North Park) is being repaved, with a new landscaped garden area
in front of Trauma Towers as its centrepiece. New rides for 2006
include a UK-first thrill ride and a family attraction in the Black
Hole building. The Rollercoaster and Big Dipper
- two of the park's classic 'woodies' - will receive seatbelts.
Looking to the future, 2007 will bring significant investment when
the Log Flume Lake will be transformed with a water based ‘family
thrill’ ride. And Project 2010 is described as "a new dimension in
thrill ride technology" which will "change forever" the North
section of the park and "break the boundaries" of the park. |

Electric Scenic Railways Remembered in New
Book [20/11/05]
Authors Kevin Scrivens and Stephen
Smith have released another major work on the history of British
fairground. Published by New Era,
The Electric Scenic Railway tells
the full story of this most magnificent travelling ride, which was a
centrepiece of the fairground in the early part of the Twentieth
Century. As with other books by these two authors, detail and
historical accuracy are paramount, and the book tells the amazing
story of each Scenic Railway that has travelled the UK fair circuit.
By the time of the Second World War, these rides were old news, and
would all but disappear by the middle of the last century.

'Dreamland Must Remain an Amusement Park'
says Government Inspector [19/11/05]
The Save Dreamland Campaign is celebrating an important victory in the fight to retain Margate’s
historic amusement park. An independent Government inspector has stated
that Dreamland should remain an amusement park and the listed
Scenic Railway roller coaster at its centre should be protected. |
Campaign Leader, Nick Laister, said: “This is fantastic
news, and shows that the position we took against the Council was a
robust one. The Inspector has accepted every single one of the points we
made at last year’s Public Inquiry and has rejected virtually every
point made by the Council and the site’s owner. The Council had
maintained that Dreamland was no longer viable and were happy to allow
the site to be redeveloped for other uses. The Inspector found the
evidence of the Save Dreamland Campaign to be compelling and has asked
the Council to change the Local Plan to ensure the protection of the
amusement park.” |
|
“I am also delighted that the
Inspector asked for the Scenic Railway to be retained. He described the
Scenic Railway as an ‘extraordinary building’ and was satisfied that it
would be viable, even as a stand-alone attraction. Importantly, however,
he stated that the setting of the Scenic Railway must also be conserved.
He said that this will prevent the site from being used for anything
other than an amusement park. We are absolutely delighted about this
verdict.” Nick Laister, who gave evidence at
the Inquiry on behalf of the Campaign, added: “We will be watching the
Council very closely now, to ensure that it makes the appropriate
modifications to its Local Plan.”
This recommendation is contained in the long-awaited
Inspector’s Report on the Thanet Local Plan Public Inquiry. The Inquiry,
held in June 2004, heard evidence from the Save Dreamland Campaign,
which had objected to the Council’s U-turn on protecting Dreamland.
Until January 2003, Thanet District Council was committed
to retaining Dreamland but, following representations made by the site’s
owner in early 2003 (after the statutory deadline for representations to
the Local Plan had expired), they changed the Local Plan Policy so that
it would allow Dreamland to be completely redeveloped. The Save
Dreamland Campaign vigorously objected to this U-turn.

link to the Report itself) visit the Save Dreamland Campaign's special
Local Plan Page.

Secrets of Fairground Shows Revealed [9/10/05]
Two new books featuring fairground
sideshows and specialist entertainment have been added.
While the sideshow performers have now all but vanished, they leave a fascinating legacy of romance and mystery.
Secrets of the
Sideshows, by Joe Nickell, takes you deep inside this lost
fairground world and reveals the specific methods and tricks behind
the performances, the showmen's tactics for recruiting performers
and attracting crowds, and more. Nickell also examines the
behind-the-scenes secrets of sideshow life, including details of the
remarkable personal lives of those men and women billed as 'freaks'.
And in our second new release,
The Incomparable Testot,
we take a trip into the 1820s music halls and
theatres of Britain, which were visited by French magician Felix Testot,
with his Magical Illusions and Optical Delights. His act
variously included the Irish Giant, and Monsieur Louis: the
French Hercules. Later he was joined by his son, a proficient
violinist and juggler.

Amusement Park Closes its Gates [4/9/05]
One of Britain's oldest amusement
parks, Shipley Glen Pleasure Grounds, finally closed its gates today after more than 100 years of fun and entertainment. The site
was home to one of the world's oldest permanent amusement park
rides, the Aerial Glide, and local residents fought a long battle to
save the park and its most famous ride. The Aerial Glide was briefly
listed in 2003, following a submission by local campaigners, but a
successful appeal by the owner resulted in the ride being de-listed
a year later. Demolition followed immediately after in July 2004,
although the rest of the park continued to operate until this
weekend. |

by a housing development.

The launch of the
new book,
Pleasureland Memories: A History of Southport's Amusement Park
by Stephen Copnall will be celebrated by what is being described as
"the book event of the summer". The event is to be held on Saturday
August 20th, 2pm at the Casablanca Entertainment Centre, Southport
Pleasureland.
Pleasureland Memories
tells the story of Southport's most famous attraction for the first
time. This book follows the hugely successful release of
Kursaal Memories in
2003. This event is your chance to meet Stephen and have your copy
of the book signed. The event also includes an appearance by
renowned historian and author, Prof. John K Walton who will be

Pleasureland Memories: Out
Now! |
The book tells how Pleasureland began in the 1870s as a ramshackle
collection of shies, stalls and simple rides on Southport's
Foreshore. Following two changes in location, the Pleasureland as it
is known today opened in 1922, with famous rides such as the River
Caves and Scenic Railway roller coaster.
This book tells the full story of
the park, from its early beginnings, its temporary wartime closures,
its heyday in the 1950s and its revitalisation in recent years under
the ownership of Blackpool Pleasure Beach. This fascinating history
is accompanied by over 160 photographs, many in print for the first
time.
The event has free entry, everyone
is welcome. Click

Famous
West Country Fairground Firm Covered by New Book [15/8/05]
The name Whitelegg is almost unknown
outside the north-west of England, most commonly being found in
Lancashire and Cheshire. This book tells the story of a travelling
fairground family of Whiteleggs whose fairs took them around the
beautiful countryside of the West Country. In
T. Whitelegg & Sons'
Cavalcade of Shows, author Guy Belshaw explores the history
of this much-loved fairground firm, told through the surviving
members of the family. From travelling around the Plymouth area in a
horse drawn living wagon that doubled as a shooting gallery, Tom and
Rose Whitelegg amassed a vast amount of show tackle, and also ran
the most successful indoor amusement emporium in the west: the
Plymouth Olympia. This is a fascinating story of a true family
business. Click here

Shipley Glen Pleasure Grounds to Close [20/7/05]
One of Britain's oldest amusement
parks is to close at the end of the 2005 season. Shipley Glen
Pleasure Grounds, which was home to the vintage Aerial Glide ride
(demolished last year), has been open since Edwardian times and has
remained a very popular tourist attraction. |
|
The operators, Alan and Wendy Breeze,
who have operated the park for 20 years, have made the difficult
decision to close the park's doors due to a large increase in the
rent. The park's owner - the Teale Brothers - have applied for
planning permission to redevelop the historic park as a housing
estate. More details on Shipley Glen, including a photo gallery, can
be found here. |
Legoland Sold [20/7/05]
As reported on Joyland last month,
American investment company Blackstone Group has acquired the
Legoland Theme Parks chain from Danish toy manufacturer, Lego,
creating Europe's second biggest tourist attractions operator.
Blackstone has been quick to merge Legoland theme parks with the
Merlin Entertainments chain it acquired last month. Joyland
understands that the enlarged theme parks and attractions group will
be named 'Merlin Entertainment Group' and will be managed by the
current Merlin team, headed by CEO Nick Varney. |
